The Social Democrats (SPD) came in first with 30.9% in the Brandenburg state elections, just ahead of the far-right AfD's 29.2%. The election was a comeback for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's party, which polls predicted for weeks to come second with 20%.

Two exit polls indicated the ruling SPD party had secured a narrow lead in the Brandenburg state election by 6pm on Sunday evening.

Exit polls in Brandenburg, where a battle between the Social Democrats and the far-right Alternative for Germany was expected to take place, show a lead for the SPD. In particular, the results from the exit polls outside the polling stations in the German state give the SPD 31 percent and the AfD 30 percent.

Exit polls in the eastern German state of Brandenburg gave the ruling centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) a narrow lead over the far-right Alternative for Germany in Sunday's state parliamentary elections.
