The first named tropical storm of the 2025 Atlantic season, Chantal, made landfall in the Carolinas on the Fourth of July weekend, ahead of a predicted above-average season. Chantal hit shore on Sunday morning near Myrtle Beach, per CNN, with sustained winds between 50 and 60 mph.

Two North Carolinians are missing after they paddled a canoe onto a lake as Tropical Storm Chantal lashed the southern states over the weekend.

WRAL News reported that dozens were rescued in Durham County after rains caused the Eno River to overflow. Floodwaters also prompted the closure of multiple roads and highways, including parts of the I-40 and I-85 in Orange County, it said.
