Bitterly cold temperatures hindered firefighters’ efforts to douse a Brooklyn house fire early Wednesday, with frozen hydrants complicating the response as personnel encountered heavy flames, officials said.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue were called to a home near 67th and Ballard Avenue, just before 5 a.m. LFR says a neighbor called 9-1-1 saying they could see flames coming from the home. Firefighters arrived and began working to extinguish those flames quickly.

The FDNY says the agency had difficulty fighting the fire as hydrants were frozen and the water used to tackle the flames quickly turned to ice and coated everything. "I believe there were two frozen hydrants on this block so the water they brought in had to come from the next intersection.
