Five people who are or have been employed with the Houston Independent School District allegedly orchestrated a $1 million teacher certification scheme.

Among those facing charges for engaging in organized criminal activity is the alleged “kingpin” behind the cheating ring, a basketball coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston. Also charged is the testing proctor who prosecutors say allowed the switch between the teacher candidate and the proxy.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Monday that charges had been filed in a massive teacher certification cheating ring that led to unqualified teachers in classrooms not only in the Houston area but across the state.
