Lakeland police said the boy found a gun in a car outside his residence on West Crawford Street on Sunday. He died at the hospital on Tuesday.

A 6-year-old child was rushed to a hospital in Lakeland on Sunday after police said he sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

According to a preliminary report from detectives, it appears that the boy suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot from a firearm he had access to inside the vehicle, the release said. The boy remained in critical condition as of Monday morning, LPD said.
