The deadly shooting happened in 2023. At around 4:10 a.m. on Nov. 11 that year, officers responded to a home near 79th and Peoria Avenues for reports of a shooting. When they got there, they found a man inside who was shot dead. A woman was also found with life-threatening injuries from being shot. She was taken to the hospital where she died.

Alexander Lee Smith, a 21-year-old from Gilbert, is facing two counts of first-degree murder in connection to a 2023 Peoria double homicide.

Officers and detectives obtained information at both scenes that led them to identify Watkins as the suspect in both shootings. Harwood said that Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene at Sodus by emergency medical services, with an autopsy indicating that he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, dying instantly.

The Peoria Police Department and U.S. Marshals announced they arrested 21-year-old Alexander Lee Smith in Gilbert on Monday.
