A Ukrainian drone attack killed a mother and her toddler in western Russia on Wednesday, local officials said, in a major overnight barrage that set an oil refinery ablaze and targeted a nuclear facility.

Two people were killed and as many others were injured in an overnight Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's Belgorod region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Wednesday.

In a significant escalation of cross-border warfare, Ukraine launched its largest drone offensive yet into Russian territory, resulting in the tragic deaths of a mother and toddler, while successfully targeting strategic installations including an oil refinery and nuclear facility.

The reported strike comes two nights after Ukrainian forces launched a joint attack against the refinery that allegedly damaged multiple on-site facilities.

Drone strikes were reported across multiple Russian regions, including Nizhny Novgorod, Smolensk, Tver, and Bryansk, igniting fires and triggering air defence responses. While there were no reported casualties, an oil refinery in the city of Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod, suffered significant damage.

Russia launched a hundred Shahed and imitation drones at Ukraine. The Air Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed 65 of them. The drones were launched from the Russian cities of Orel,
