The Vancouver Canucks have made a series of trades in the last week that included sending the disgruntled J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers for Filip Chytil while also acquiring Drew O’Connor and Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Danton Heinen and Vincent Desharnais.

After it looked like Vancouver was set to take a step back by sort of punting with the J.T. Miller trade, it flipped the Rangers’ first-rounder and picked up exactly what the team needed: another top-four defender who can play significant minutes and take some of the pressure off Quinn Hughes.

The rumored rift between Vancouver Canucks centers Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller ended Friday when Miller was traded to the New York Rangers. The Canucks followed that by acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson and left winger Drew O'Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Dorrington is a big defenseman who skates well and is highly physical. His puck play is quite limited, but the tools are intriguing enough to be a long shot to make it to the NHL. Brännström, 25, has become an AHL/NHL tweener. His skating is high-end, but he’s not a premier puck-mover or that competitive which isn’t ideal as a smaller defenseman.

The Canucks were reportedly highly interested in acquiring Drew Fortescue, but got Victor Mancini from the Rangers instead.

The Rangers made a monumental trade on Friday, bringing JT Miller back to the place where he spent the first six seasons of his NHL career.
