The bulk of the fire is threatening the Carrizo Plain National Monument, which is home to several endangered and threatened wildlife and plant species.

Madre Fire initially started 1:07 p.m. July 2 in San Luis Obispo County, California. Since its discovery four days ago, it has burned 80,480 acres. A crew of 1,472 firefighters effectively contained 30% of the fire by Sunday evening.

The Madre Fire burning in the eastern corner of San Luis Obispo County was 30% containment as of Sunday morning. In a post on its X account, Cal Fire SLO also announced that the massive fire is now 30% contained.
