Updates on Trump's Return to Office
In his inaugural address following his swearing in as the nation’s 47th president, Trump promised to sign executive orders to begin the “complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense.” He followed through by signing stacks of orders, some routine but many sure to spark controversy and potentially lawsuits. He withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement, a climate treaty which aims to limit the increase in global temperatures primarily by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Another order purports to end birthright citizenship, which courts have ruled is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. The order is likely to be challenged in court. Trump also formally nominated his cabinet, and named officials as acting head of them until his picks are confirmed. He issued orders to agencies freezing new regulations and new hiring, except for the military, until his appointees are in place to lead them. He also signed an executive order requiring federal workers to return to the workforce.
