Thomas was designated as the team’s franchise player earlier this month, meaning the only way she could sign with another team was via trade. The move can't become official until Feb. 1.

Things are heating up in Phoenix after the Mercury acquired 5-time All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas in a trade with the Connecticut Sun, per reports.
The Atlanta Dream have signed three-time All-Star Brionna Jones marking their second major free-agent acquisition of the offseason after adding 10-time All-Star Brittney Griner. Jones previously played with the Connecticut Sun. Jones' agent, Boris Lelchitski, confirmed the deal to ESPN's Alexa Philippou on Thursday.
The Sun will receive guard Natasha Cloud, wing Rebecca Allen and the No. 12 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft in exchange for Thomas. Ty Harris will also head to Phoenix in the deal. The full trade was initially reported by Howard Megdal of The Next and later confirmed by Philippou.
The Phoenix Mercury are finalizing a deal to acquire Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun. That's according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss it publicly.
The Atlanta Dream made their second splashy free-agent signing in as many days, agreeing to terms with center Bri Jones. Jones now joins former Phoenix center Brittney Griner in a revamped Dream frontcourt under new head coach Karl Smesko.
In exchange for Sabally, the Dallas Wings received Ty Harris and Kiki Herbert Harrigan from the Mercury as well as NaLyssa Smith and the No. 8 overall draft pick from the Indiana Fever. The Fever will acquire Sophie Cunningham and Phoenix’s second-round pick.

Jones is a three-time All-Star and has played her entire career with the Connecticut Sun after being drafted No. 8 in 2017.
