The leaders of both Canada and Mexico got on the phone with President Donald Trump this past week to seek solutions after he slapped tariffs on their countries, but China’s president appears unlikely to make a similar call soon.

China’s embassy in the U.S. issued a warning that the country was ready for a trade war or “any other type of war" with the U.S. following Trump’s additional 10% tariffs imposed on the country Tuesday. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shot back saying the U.S. is “prepared” for a war with China.

More recently, China retaliated to the US trade war by announcing tariffs on 80 US products. China is set to place 15 per cent tariffs on certain energy exports, including coal, natural gas and petroleum. An additional 10 per cent tariffs will be placed on 72 manufactured products including trucks, motor homes and agricultural machinery.
