Nine workers were trapped inside a coal mine in Assam's Dima Hasao district after a sudden gush of water flooded the quarry.

Dima Hasao District Magistrate Simanta Kumar Das said that the process of ‘dewatering’ or draining three abandoned mines within 500 metres of the ill-fated mine helped lower the water level within it. It is possible that these mines – each with a network of narrow tunnels branching out from the wall of a vertical pit – could be interconnected.

Rescue operations in Assam’s Dima Hasao district have led to the recovery of another body from the flooded coal quarry, bringing the total number of bodies recovered to two.

Guwahati: The body of another worker, who was trapped inside a coal mine in Assam ‘s Dima Hasao district, was recovered on Saturday from the quarry during rescue operations, an official said. Two bodies have so far been recovered with the first one brought out from the quarry on Wednesday, he said.
