Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Acting Director Russell Vought told agency employees on Monday not to come into work or perform any work tasks—a dismal sign for the bureau that has been targeted by President Donald Trump and tech billionaires including Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.

The order to shutter the agency’s headquarters follows another order issued Saturday by Mr. Vought, who also leads the Office of Management and Budget, telling agency employees to halt nearly all their work.

Trump’s DOGE, an advisory body led by Musk, has zeroed in on some agencies as part of its efforts to slash the size of government. The CFPB was the latest to come into Musk’s crosshairs following DOGE’s efforts to fire staff members and stop work at the U.S. Agency for International Development.
