An acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB), is a sudden worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms including shortness of breath, quantity and color of phlegm that typically lasts for several days.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may experience an acute worsening of respiratory symptoms that results in additional therapy; this event is defined as a COPD exacerbation (AECOPD).

Symptoms and signs of COPD exacerbations include wheezing, distant breath sounds, tachypnea, tachycardia, accessory muscle use, cyanosis, agitation, confusion, and stupor. Initial testing should include pulse oximetry, chest x‐ray, and an electrocardiogram.
